Ed note: Find and Sign has come and gone, but more theater is in store. Read Ben Fulton’s preview of Emma, the next play staged at the Pioneer Theatre. Emma opens on February 17 and runs to March 3. For ticket information www.pioneertheatre.org.
Pioneer Theatre Company opens the world premiere Find and Sign on Friday, January 13th. Find and Sign is the newest play by Wendy MacLeod, who won a Special Jury Prize at Sundance for “The House of Yes,” a popular indie film that starred Parker Posey.
The six-person cast explores the serious themes of race and class, but within the frame a romantic (somewhat dark) comedy. Set in the New York City, Julia is pretty, smart, funny, and a dedicated public high school teacher in the Bronx. She is trying to get Mac, one of her brightest students, into Columbia. Iago is an on-the-rise and on-the-make music executive on the lookout for young hip-hop artists. They meet at a party and begin somewhat cautiously to date, but the road to love is mined with dangers as they consider the price of emotional commitment, their pursuit of career goals, and the perils and pitfalls of dating in modern-day New York. One conflict is Mac’s decision to pursue a classical education, versus chasing the bright lights of the music industry where he also has potential. Both his teacher and AR representative have their own motives which may or may not be in his best interest.
Students, through the Arts Pass, can attend any performance for free. Music students would find the conflict of chasing performance at the expense of financial security interesting. The performance also coincides with a week of events on campus to mark the U’s 28th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.
Find and Sign runs January 13 through January 28. Curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings; and 2:00 p.m. for Saturday matinee. Click here for tickets, or call the Box Office at 801-581-6961.
