In a provocative new study, a University of Utah scientist argues that rising carbon dioxide emissions - the major cause of global warming - cannot be stabilized unless the world's economy collapses or society builds the equivalent of one new nuclear power plant each day.


It's Cool to be Crimson at Rivalry Week Pep Rally

Ute fans are urged to wear their crimson gear this coming Monday, Nov. 23 for the annual Rivalry Week Pep Rally beginning at noon on the J. Willard Marriott Library plaza. Join Utah coaches, players, band and cheerleaders as they rally to help the team beat BYU in the annual rivalry football game. There will be free lunch, giveaways, and other fun activities.


2009 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry to Give Benning Lecture

2009 Nobel Laureate Venki Ramakrishnan, Ph.D., whose prize-winning work began at the University of Utah, is returning to campus to present a Benning Society Special Lecture in Medicine. His remarks will explain the structure and function of the ribosome, how the ribosome structure helps us to understand the mechanisms of existing antibiotics and develop new ones, and the role the U of U played in his research.

In celebration of the 150-year anniversary of "On the Origin of Species," published Nov. 24, 1859, Francis H. Brown – a distinguished professor of geology and geophysics and dean of the College of Mines and Earth Sciences at the University of Utah – will deliver a free public lecture about the precise geological chronology of our earliest human ancestors.


Tiny Bubbles Clean Oil from Water

Small amounts of oil leave a fluorescent sheen on polluted water. Oil sheen is hard to remove, even when the water is aerated with ozone or filtered through sand. Now, a University of Utah engineer has developed an inexpensive new method to remove oil sheen by repeatedly pressurizing and depressurizing ozone gas, creating microscopic bubbles that attack the oil so it can be removed by sand filters.
