FAQ
Who manages RedThread?
RT is managed by University Marketing & Communications (UMC) for the purpose of marketing the U by facilitating communication to potential students, current students, alumni, and friends of the U.
What things can I write about?
Arts on campus, what it’s like to be an out-of-state student at the U, dorm life, graduate or undergraduate research, U athletics, pictures of what you eat for lunch every day while attending the U – RT is willing to entertain any ideas that you may have if they capture the U of U experience. Be creative and carve your own niche.
Does RedThread pay its contributors?
The RT community writes because they are passionate about the U. Unfortunately, we are unable to pay contributors at this time. We are happy to provide contributors with letters of recommendations upon request. We frequently hold contests with prizes for our contributors.
How often do I need to post to RedThread?
Post as often as you like. Submissions don’t need to be lengthy but need to have substance. Contributors that want to be followed and recognized in the RT community should post at least weekly. Except for temporary blogs/features, sanctioned contributors need to commit to writing for at least one academic semester.
How will the University of Utah use my writing?
Your contributions will be accessible on redthread.utah.edu or by any RSS reader application. UMC will promote RT online and through existing marketing channels.
Do I maintain copyright for the material that I post?
All posts, photos or copy, will be credited to the contributor. The content creator maintains the rights to his/her content; however, the University of Utah shall have joint rights to distribute the content via redthread.utah.edu in perpetuity.
Do you provide technical assistance for contributors?
Yes. We will do everything we can to help you easily post content on RT, including formatting video and setting up mobile posting. Unfortunately, we can’t help you troubleshoot problems on your personal computer.
Can I post pictures and video on RedThread?
Yes. Any media that is normally posted on a blog or Flickr feed can be posted on RT. Copyrighted material cannot be posted.
When you say that you “edit content” what does that mean?
To a degree, content on RT represents the University of Utah. The Hub is not an independent online publication, so there are certain guidelines for content. Generally, content should represent the University in a favorable light. UMC ensures that postings contain proper spelling and grammar. Privacy laws should be respected. Content that is illegal, profane, or defamatory will not be posted.
